If you ride a road bike and want to get faster on flat and rolling terrain, clip-on aero bars are one of the most effective upgrades you can make. They let you get into an aerodynamic position without buying a dedicated TT or triathlon bike, and they can be installed and adjusted at home with basic tools. What Are Clip-On Aero Bars?

Clip-on aero bars are handlebar extensions that bolt onto the centre section of your existing road bike handlebar. Most road bikes can accept clip-on aero bars as long as the handlebar has a standard clamp section, typically 31.8mm or 26mm in diameter.

Unlike the integrated cockpits found on dedicated triathlon and TT bikes, clip-on aero bars can be removed with basic tools and do not require a full cockpit overhaul. How to Install Clip-On Aero Bars

Check Handlebar Compatibility

Confirm your handlebar diameter at the clamp section before buying. Most modern road bars are 31.8mm, but some older or budget bars are 26mm. Many clip-on aero bars include shims to cover both sizes, but it is worth verifying.

Position the Clamps

Place the clamps symmetrically on either side of the stem, at equal distances from the centre. Measure from the stem face to each clamp so both sides match exactly.

Set Arm Pad Width

Start with the arm pads at roughly shoulder width or slightly narrower. Too narrow increases shoulder tension, which causes fatigue over longer efforts. Too wide reduces the aerodynamic benefit and can feel unstable. But overall, most riders tend to go way too wide, so keep it narrower rather than wider. 

Set Extension Angle

Most riders do best with extensions angled slightly upward, around 15 to 20 degrees above horizontal. A slight upward tilt reduces wrist strain over longer rides and is generally more comfortable than a fully flat position. Avoid angling your aero extensions upward by more than 25 degrees. Unless you have been professionally fitted to this specific position, a steep angle increases aerodynamic drag and reduces your leverage. 

Tighten Bolts Carefully

Use a torque wrench if your handlebar or the clip-on system is carbon. Over-tightening on carbon bars can cause damage that is not always visible until it fails.

Adjusting Your Position After Installation

Installing the bars is only part of the process. Clip-on aero bars shift your weight forward, which affects how your road bike fits underneath you.

If the aero position feels cramped or puts too much pressure on your hands and wrists, check the extension length first. Your elbows should sit comfortably on the pads with your hands reaching naturally forward to the grips, without having to stretch or bunch up.

Saddle position may also need adjustment. How to Practice in the Aero Position

Most riders find that getting comfortable in the aero position takes time, especially if they have not used aero bars before. Start on a turbo trainer or stationary setup before riding on the road. This lets you find a stable position without the added demands of traffic and cornering.

When you move to road riding, begin on quiet, flat roads where you can hold the position steadily without needing to brake or corner sharply. It is important to practise sitting up and grabbing the main bars before braking, since you cannot brake effectively from the aero position.

Clip-On Aero Bars vs a Dedicated TT Bike

A common question is whether clip-on aero bars on a road bike are significantly slower than a full TT or triathlon cockpit. The answer depends on the specific bikes being compared, but for many setups the difference is smaller than riders expect.

Road bikes fitted with clip-on aero bars and dedicated triathlon cockpits are often aerodynamically similar unless the TT bike uses fully integrated, cable-hidden systems. The bigger gains from a dedicated TT bike tend to come from overall geometry and integration rather than the bars alone.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Setting the pads too wide. While a wide stance feels stable, it catches too much wind and fatigues your shoulders. Start narrower and only go wider if you need the extra stability. 

Skipping the saddle adjustment. Ignoring how the aero position changes your weight distribution leads to discomfort and poor power output.

Going to the road too soon. Practising first on a turbo trainer makes the transition to outdoor riding much safer.

Tightening bolts unevenly. Asymmetric clamp tension causes the bars to twist or shift under load.
